• Robin #135 - Vol. 2 - 2005

Robin #135 – Vol. 2 – 2005 continues the bold new direction set in the previous issue, with Stephanie Brown stepping fully into the role of Robin under Batman’s intense supervision. Written by Bill Willingham and brought to life by Damion Scott’s stylised artwork, this chapter explores the weight of legacy, the harsh realities of Gotham’s streets, and what it truly means to wear the “R” on your chest.

With Tim Drake temporarily out of the picture, Stephanie is thrust into a dangerous world of expectation and scrutiny. In Issue #135, we see her balancing raw determination with an emotional need to prove herself — to Batman, to the city, and to her own doubts. She’s not just filling in; she’s fighting for legitimacy, all while contending with a mentor who is less than forgiving.

Willingham does a superb job of capturing Stephanie’s inner conflict. She brings fire, ingenuity, and heart to the role, but she’s also reckless — and that recklessness collides hard with Batman’s rigid expectations. The story subtly questions the nature of legacy and mentorship: can anyone truly become Robin, or is it a role that must be earned through a very specific, often unforgiving mould?

Visually, Damion Scott’s energetic art style is a perfect match for Stephanie’s youthful ambition and Gotham’s unforgiving pace. His angular, exaggerated designs and vivid layouts give the issue a gritty, urban energy. Every panel feels in motion, underscoring the whirlwind that Stephanie has thrown herself into. Gotham feels alive, unpredictable, and steeped in danger — a city that’s always moving faster than its heroes.

Robin #135 is a significant piece in the Robin mythos — not just because of who’s wearing the cape, but because it asks what kind of hero Gotham actually needs. It's character-driven, tense, and unafraid to dig into the emotional and physical cost of stepping into the shadow of a legend.
